Massage in Naples

A Client's recent Question:

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch massage approach that can support dramatic improvements in the quality of your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction. The intent of this form of massage is to listen to the Cranial Rhythm and help the nervous system to relax and self-correct. Because Craniosacral is so gentle, it may be used with infants, seniors, people of all ages.

Craniosacral Therapy as used at Lighten Therapies is based on the foundation of Dr. John Upledger's DO's work. Dr. John was a pioneer who brought this type of massage and manual therapy to a greater range of people who have studied and fine tuned their skills with various levels of training and experience. Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy

Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy has been shown to be very helpful in working with children who have sensory processing challenges. About 5-10% of children have been noted to need some type of extra support involvement due to sensory issues.

Our senses give us information that help us to relate to ourselves and others. Every moment we are constantly interacting with someone or something.  A healthy integrated sensory system helps us to survive and to move through the world with more ease.  The earlier children get the help they need, the less they have to struggle.  We all want our children to thrive and be happy.  When your child receives the inner work that can help integrate the nervous system, it is then possible to navigate through life easier.

If your child is finding it difficult to integrate sensory information to move forward, you may want to consider Craniosacral Therapy.  The focus of Craniosacral Therapy is to support, balance and enhance  the functioning of the nervous system. Through this light touch modality, the body seems to self-regulate and self-organize more efficiently.

For more information on helping children with Sensory Processing Disorders, I'd like to recommend the book, "the Out-of-Sync Child, written by Carol STock Kranowitz, M.A.  She offers an educational approach on how to identify and distinguish integration difficulties.  She also provides healthy responses in how to support your child to be the best they can be.

For a Craniosacral Therapist in your area, look at the Upledger Institute link.  If you would like someone specifically trained to work with children, it will be noted that the therapist has trained in Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy.

Structural Integration Massage in Naples

What is Structural Integration Therapy?

Dr. Ida Rolf is the developer of the 10 series of Structural Integration.  She found that by working with the fascia's network of interconnected tissue that she could unwind and lengthen the body and reach down into the core to release deep patterns of dysfunction.  The focus with Structural Integration is to align the body with gravity to create more ease in movement and to revitalize the body.  By working with form, the function of each aspect of the body is enhanced.  There is nothing more wonderful than getting off the table with so much more freedom, balance and energy in oneself.

Many people have heard that "rolfing" is uncomfortable.  The original Rolfers were taught by Dr. Ida Rolf and the bodywork was famed as being rather painful.  Since that time, many schools have opened their doors, and most have evolved to a place of listening to the body and respecting defense systems that activate when too much pressure or manipulation is done.  With that said, when the fascia has shortened, twisted or rotated over the many years,  most likely the reorganization of the tissues will bring a client into uncomfortable sensations.  An experienced Structural Integration Therapist will work with the client at whatever level is suitable to the person on the table.  If change is created too quickly, it does not integrate longterm as well.  The client needs to be able to relax and feel deeply for optimal benefits.

Most Structural Integration Sessions last anywhere between 1 1/2-2 hours.  In most cases, the client is dressed in his/her underwear so he/she can move easily.  It is recommended to do the 10 series to receive the best advantages of this type of massage work.  However, it is possible to try a session to see if this type of bodywork meets your specific needs.

Structural Integration is basically a therapeutic modality.  Its intention is to create a healthy web of connections in the 3 dimensional body with order and alignment in regards to gravity.  If you are interested in finding more about how to improve your posture and health, give Sharon Hartnett LMT, a call now for your free 15 minute phone consultation:  239 692-8486

Massage Benefits Your Golf Game

Massage Benefits Your Golf Game

It's March and many of the golfers have already warmed up during this year's season in Naples.  But for those of you who are still feeling a little stiff and noticing a limited range of motion, you may want to consider some Massage to address your Golf Game challenges.

Deep layering into the fascia and the muscles will help alleviate tightness in the neck, shoulder, forearms, and hands to help improve your grip and swing.  It's also helpful to work with tight hamstrings, strained lower back muscles, and the feet to support balance, prevent injury beforehand and to enhance healing after the game. Icing and relaxation are a real plus too in reducing soreness.

Do you want to feel more length and flexibility in your movement? Would you like to reach your edge in efficiency and alignment?

Massage and Flexibility

Posture and Flexibility

Most of the patterns in our body that keep us tight with tension have been based on habitual ways of holding our posture.  So it makes sense that in order to correct our posture, we need to release our old ways of moving, and on a sensory and proprioceptive level, re-educate ourselves to move differently.

So what is the best way to lengthen and restore posture?

Fascial Bodywork Massage and Postural Exercises are both excellent tools to find center and structural alignment.

Ida Rolf was a Pioneer in putting a 10 series of Fascial Bodywork sessions into a recipe to address the whole body as an interconnected working organism.  She saw the body as a web of interlacing connective tissue that could be manipulated to bring more integrity to movement and flexibility in relationship to gravity.

How do the sessions progress?

At the beginning of a series, the Massage Therapist will work with the Upper Body first, going to the lower half next, and on the third session integrating the superficial layers.  Next, the series moves more into core with a deeper level of touch, moving from different angles and line to bring more coherency to the well of the body. After that is accomplished, aligning the head and bringing balance to the work lines the body to move with flexibility and better efficiency.

Structural Integration works well with Core Based Exercises.  Some of the exercises that I recommend are:  Yoga, Gyrotonics, Pilates, Continuum and Tai Chi.  Also working with Yamuna balls and rollers daily can help lengthen the tissues and contracted muscles.

Structural Integration may also be helpful in 3 sessions to give your body more lightness and flexibility quickly.  At Lighten Up Therapies, upon request we also offer Craniosacral Therapy in combination with the SI work because of it's wonderful ability to balance the nervous system.

If you are stuck in old patterns and looking for some relief, call Sharon Hartnett at (239) 692-8486 for a free 15 minute consultation.  She has over 15 years of experience and has helped many people to feel healthier, freer, and with structured coherency.

Our goal is to bring out the best in you!

Massage in Naples: Hands in Service

Hands in Service

Some people call Massage a luxury.  I don't think it is.  People long to be touched and met in the most raw and basic way. As individuals, we have learned to experience ourselves as separate Beings. While we believe ourselves to be separate,  there is almost a magnetic force that pulls us together from a higher plane of interconnectedness. We may have developed strategies to hide, to argue, to push away the other, but in truth, while those others may hold some pleasure,  there is nothing better than feeling touched, complete and whole in love.  I think that part of our journey is to view ourselves as separate Beings, while choosing different styles of relationships to explore and sample moments in humanity.  We are all made of the same fabric and the ultimate truth in my humble opinion, is that we are all awakening to the Sacred Now of the Eternal.  While some steps may seem backward, in fact, any darkness that is encountered on the path, is just another aspect of illusion.  What counts is that while we have a sense of Self on that road, that things are exactly as they are meant to be... whether standing alone or seeing a hand reach out for connection.   Eventually though,  life is always knocking on the door, readily available, and waiting to reveal its mystery for your curiosity.  Touch is just another vehicle of awakening and remembering.  The way we touch each other is expressed infinitely.  The gift of our belief in separation and duality is that we have the experience to know unity as well and to ride the wave of life with joy and adventure.

In our isolation and beliefs of separation, touch can be very healing.  Think of a Mother's kiss to her child's boo boo.  Imagine the touch of a kind hand.  Feel inside your experience of when you were most loved and cherished.  Was there not something else there holding you with kindness.

At Lighten Up Therapies,  your journey may be serene, we may laugh aloud or explore the Spiritual Nature of Things.  The intention though is to be in Service the the way of the Divine.

Certified Upledger Craniosacral Therapist

I have been practicing Craniosacral Therapy for about 15 years, but just got very serious about my study in this area about 5 years ago.  It is a huge commitment to learn the Craniosacral System inside and out, and to apply the techniques in a manner that meets the Upledger Standards.  But I have done it and I am glad to announce that I am now Certified through the Upledger Institute to be a therapist in their organization.  I feel very blessed as their curriculum for study is professional, detailed, published and beautifully laid out to help clients all across the globe.  A special thanks to Dr. John who passed this information on to his students to help people everywhere.
