Massage in Naples
A Client's recent Question:
Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch massage approach that can support dramatic improvements in the quality of your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction. The intent of this form of massage is to listen to the Cranial Rhythm and help the nervous system to relax and self-correct. Because Craniosacral is so gentle, it may be used with infants, seniors, people of all ages.
Craniosacral Therapy as used at Lighten Therapies is based on the foundation of Dr. John Upledger's DO's work. Dr. John was a pioneer who brought this type of massage and manual therapy to a greater range of people who have studied and fine tuned their skills with various levels of training and experience. Check www.Upledger.com for a practitioner in your area.

Craniosacral Therapy and Working with the Brain
Craniosacral Therapy is a type of light touch therapy that helps to nourish the brain and the spinal system. By using the cranial bones as fulcrums, and gently helping the fluids to balance and restore, clients often walk away after a session feeling deeply relaxed.
What do you know about your brain and how it works?

Massage in Naples: Thoughts for the Day
Massage in Naples: Thoughts for the Day
Change the Way You Look at Things
Sometimes we get caught in the same trap. We continue to make the same bad choice over and over. So why do we do that? Are we unconscious? Do we blame others?
When your life seems stressful, it is a smart time to slow down, quiet your mind and be curious about your participation in relationships. It is a great time and opportunity to acknowledge the truth of what is and to wonder how to live without the same dynamic. Be patience, invite in other perspectives and truly listen.
It is in our relaxation and emptiness that creativity can take hold.
Coming inward and just Being... in a world. nothing is better than that!
Warmly,

Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy
Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy has been shown to be very helpful in working with children who have sensory processing challenges. About 5-10% of children have been noted to need some type of extra support involvement due to sensory issues.
Our senses give us information that help us to relate to ourselves and others. Every moment we are constantly interacting with someone or something. A healthy integrated sensory system helps us to survive and to move through the world with more ease. The earlier children get the help they need, the less they have to struggle. We all want our children to thrive and be happy. When your child receives the inner work that can help integrate the nervous system, it is then possible to navigate through life easier.
If your child is finding it difficult to integrate sensory information to move forward, you may want to consider Craniosacral Therapy. The focus of Craniosacral Therapy is to support, balance and enhance the functioning of the nervous system. Through this light touch modality, the body seems to self-regulate and self-organize more efficiently.
For more information on helping children with Sensory Processing Disorders, I'd like to recommend the book, "the Out-of-Sync Child, written by Carol STock Kranowitz, M.A. She offers an educational approach on how to identify and distinguish integration difficulties. She also provides healthy responses in how to support your child to be the best they can be.
For a Craniosacral Therapist in your area, look at the Upledger Institute link. If you would like someone specifically trained to work with children, it will be noted that the therapist has trained in Pediatric Craniosacral Therapy.
For any question, please call Sharon Hartnett at (239) 692-8486

Structural Integration Massage in Naples
What is Structural Integration Therapy?
Many people have heard that "rolfing" is uncomfortable. The original Rolfers were taught by Dr. Ida Rolf and the bodywork was famed as being rather painful. Since that time, many schools have opened their doors, and most have evolved to a place of listening to the body and respecting defense systems that activate when too much pressure or manipulation is done. With that said, when the fascia has shortened, twisted or rotated over the many years, most likely the reorganization of the tissues will bring a client into uncomfortable sensations. An experienced Structural Integration Therapist will work with the client at whatever level is suitable to the person on the table. If change is created too quickly, it does not integrate longterm as well. The client needs to be able to relax and feel deeply for optimal benefits.
Most Structural Integration Sessions last anywhere between 1 1/2-2 hours. In most cases, the client is dressed in his/her underwear so he/she can move easily. It is recommended to do the 10 series to receive the best advantages of this type of massage work. However, it is possible to try a session to see if this type of bodywork meets your specific needs.
Structural Integration is basically a therapeutic modality. Its intention is to create a healthy web of connections in the 3 dimensional body with order and alignment in regards to gravity. Massage Benefits Your Golf Game
Massage Benefits Your Golf Game
It's March and many of the golfers have already warmed up during this year's season in Naples. But for those of you who are still feeling a little stiff and noticing a limited range of motion, you may want to consider some Massage to address your Golf Game challenges.
Deep layering into the fascia and the muscles will help alleviate tightness in the neck, shoulder, forearms, and hands to help improve your grip and swing. It's also helpful to work with tight hamstrings, strained lower back muscles, and the feet to support balance, prevent injury beforehand and to enhance healing after the game. Icing and relaxation are a real plus too in reducing soreness.
Do you want to feel more length and flexibility in your movement? Would you like to reach your edge in efficiency and alignment?

Massage and Flexibility
Posture and Flexibility
Most of the patterns in our body that keep us tight with tension have been based on habitual ways of holding our posture. So it makes sense that in order to correct our posture, we need to release our old ways of moving, and on a sensory and proprioceptive level, re-educate ourselves to move differently.
So what is the best way to lengthen and restore posture?
Fascial Bodywork Massage and Postural Exercises are both excellent tools to find center and structural alignment.
Ida Rolf was a Pioneer in putting a 10 series of Fascial Bodywork sessions into a recipe to address the whole body as an interconnected working organism. She saw the body as a web of interlacing connective tissue that could be manipulated to bring more integrity to movement and flexibility in relationship to gravity.
How do the sessions progress?
At the beginning of a series, the Massage Therapist will work with the Upper Body first, going to the lower half next, and on the third session integrating the superficial layers. Next, the series moves more into core with a deeper level of touch, moving from different angles and line to bring more coherency to the well of the body. After that is accomplished, aligning the head and bringing balance to the work lines the body to move with flexibility and better efficiency.
Structural Integration works well with Core Based Exercises. Some of the exercises that I recommend are: Yoga, Gyrotonics, Pilates, Continuum and Tai Chi. Also working with Yamuna balls and rollers daily can help lengthen the tissues and contracted muscles.
Structural Integration may also be helpful in 3 sessions to give your body more lightness and flexibility quickly. At Lighten Up Therapies, upon request we also offer Craniosacral Therapy in combination with the SI work because of it's wonderful ability to balance the nervous system.
If you are stuck in old patterns and looking for some relief, call Sharon Hartnett at (239) 692-8486 for a free 15 minute consultation. She has over 15 years of experience and has helped many people to feel healthier, freer, and with structured coherency.

Massage in Naples: Hands in Service
Hands in Service
Some people call Massage a luxury. I don't think it is. People long to be touched and met in the most raw and basic way. As individuals, we have learned to experience ourselves as separate Beings. While we believe ourselves to be separate, there is almost a magnetic force that pulls us together from a higher plane of interconnectedness. We may have developed strategies to hide, to argue, to push away the other, but in truth, while those others may hold some pleasure, there is nothing better than feeling touched, complete and whole in love. I think that part of our journey is to view ourselves as separate Beings, while choosing different styles of relationships to explore and sample moments in humanity. We are all made of the same fabric and the ultimate truth in my humble opinion, is that we are all awakening to the Sacred Now of the Eternal. While some steps may seem backward, in fact, any darkness that is encountered on the path, is just another aspect of illusion. What counts is that while we have a sense of Self on that road, that things are exactly as they are meant to be... whether standing alone or seeing a hand reach out for connection. Eventually though, life is always knocking on the door, readily available, and waiting to reveal its mystery for your curiosity. Touch is just another vehicle of awakening and remembering. The way we touch each other is expressed infinitely. The gift of our belief in separation and duality is that we have the experience to know unity as well and to ride the wave of life with joy and adventure.
In our isolation and beliefs of separation, touch can be very healing. Think of a Mother's kiss to her child's boo boo. Imagine the touch of a kind hand. Feel inside your experience of when you were most loved and cherished. Was there not something else there holding you with kindness.
At Lighten Up Therapies, your journey may be serene, we may laugh aloud or explore the Spiritual Nature of Things. The intention though is to be in Service the the way of the Divine.

Certified Upledger Craniosacral Therapist
I have been practicing Craniosacral Therapy for about 15 years, but just got very serious about my study in this area about 5 years ago. It is a huge commitment to learn the Craniosacral System inside and out, and to apply the techniques in a manner that meets the Upledger Standards. But I have done it and I am glad to announce that I am now Certified through the Upledger Institute to be a therapist in their organization. I feel very blessed as their curriculum for study is professional, detailed, published and beautifully laid out to help clients all across the globe. A special thanks to Dr. John who passed this information on to his students to help people everywhere.

Laughing in Naples
I laugh at myself because sometimes I am silly. I laugh because sometimes I make mistakes, I am nervous or sometimes life feels like a cosmic joke. Mostly though I laugh because I understand that in order to lighten up it is important not to take things so seriously so much of the time. After all, I am living in Naples... what could be better than that? A Massage may help you to smile more too!
When do you laugh and yourself?

Light Touch Massage Relieves Pain: Craniosacral Therapy
Light Touch Massage
There are two ways to relieve pain through Massage: Light Touch or Deep Touch
Light Touch such as in Craniosacral Therapy avoids any type of defensiveness in the body. It's an easier way to meld between therapist and client. It's more of a listening, being, and gentle communication.
Deep Touch can be very beneficial also. Deep Tissue Massage can be layered in from superficial down to the deeper muscles and fascia. Or- a Massage Therapist can follow into the deeper core of the body by delving in a slow but deep fashion.
The way that I look at Massage and these two approaches is that one is more of a feminine energy, and the other is more masculine. Each person has a preference of what type of energy or techniques that would meet their unique needs better. A Therapist holds a passive or active intention while bringing awareness to the client's own signals to direct the healing.
Today , I'd like to focus more on the light touch Craniosacral Therapy. It is a very gentle type of touch where the therapist lays hands on the client and follows the innate movements of the tissues and the Craniosacral system. While it may not look like there is much going on, in fact, the connection and slight changes that occur with the craniosacral and nervous system produce profound changes in the anatomy and physiology. Often people who have deep seated pain, find themselves totally relaxed and yet more vital and alive.
Craniosacral Therapy is a very specific type of massage in that the experienced Massage Therapist understands the rhythmic movements of the bones, the brain & spinal cord and its membrane. They can feel the of symmetry, amplitude, rate and quality of the rhythms and support a more enhanced functioning primarily to the nervous system.
If you would like to find out more, I am included a Craniosacral You Tube here that may answer some of your questions about Craniosacral Therapy.

Releasing Stress... & Massage in Naples
What is Stress?
Stress is an internal reaction to life when things don't feel comfortable. You'll know when you are stressed because your body starts to feels tense. At the beginning you may feel a little bit of excitement. When this happens, stress can help you adapt to a situation. It can spur you into getting action lists done. It can also help you prepare and act smartly in the case of an emergency. However, if stress plays out for a long amount of time, it can take a toll of your health.
Stress usually includes emotional, mental and physical characteristics and symptoms. At the basis of most chronic stress are feelings of fear. Something feels threatening and you feel triggered easily. When the dysfunctional energy pattern of stress is not integrated with emotional completion of its cycle, it can lead to ongoing automatic reactions of anger, anxiety, depression and irritability. When this energy dynamic becomes habitual, is easy for people to feel overwhelmed by life's changes. Stress can also negatively affect your health in many ways. The tissues often feel tight, clumped together, immovable and dehydrated. Stress can suppress the immune system, it can disturb the digestive tract, prevent healthy breathing such as with asthma, trigger high blood pressure, disturb sleep... basically the whole body is affecting by constant stress that is not addressed.
How to Release Stress:
Are You Your Reaction or are you Something Else?
1. Recognize that you are associating with stress. First you have to understand that you are being triggered to react a certain way, and notice how that is affecting your life. Are certain life moments and experiences more difficult for you to navigate? Some common stressors in Life are: Birth trauma, divorce, death, financial issues, exams, lack of sleep and illness, war, and dangerous situations that actually threaten your life. Be mindful of what relationships are causing stress in your life.
2. Notice the thoughts that are coming up in your thinking. Notice if your internal environment is responding correctly to what is happening in the moment. Often the stress is part of our old belief systems and the body/mind/feelings react even when everything is safe and OK. Question your beliefs and notice how they are affecting your life. If your thoughts changed, would your life change? Stay present with yourself and look around. What is really happening in the moment. Where do your thoughts and reality diverge?
3. Feel deeply into yourself and notice the patterns of stress inside your body. Hang out there and explore. Do you have any understanding that the stress reaction is part of your history verses the present moment?
4. Begin to distinguish the differences between emotions and sensations. Often when people get stressed it is because a physiological reaction begins and the sensations in the body from the autonomic nervous system initiate the fight-or flight reaction. Often with stress, people tend to come up with strategies not to feel the origin of the discomfort. Notice if you want to move away from your sensations and feelings or if you can just stay there with your eyes open and feel the fullness of the moment.
5. Often when stress becomes too much for people, it is because some part of the brain has not found a resolution to the original fear. The Amygdala and Reticular Activating System are out of alignment. Mindfulness to whatever is happening in the moment can be the best healing to stress.
Stress is not always easy for people to handle by themselves. Basically, it is a closed system that needs to be interrupted so that new information can come in and enlighten the individual.
If Stress is a big part of your life, make sure that you ask for some help.
At Lighten Up Therapies, we use a holistic model to health. While the basis of our work is through Massage Therapy, we also hold a space for your inner intelligence to lead you through life's challenges. We find that listening, mindfulness, exploration, melding touch, and respect go a long way in helping to release stress. Our work is to help you to integrate the Mind Body Spirit connection.

Emilie Conrad from a Massage Perspective
I fell in love with Continuum Work about 15 years ago one day in Cleveland when a yoga teacher started sharing some of the things she learned at a Workshop. Since that time, I have studies with Emilie at about 3 of her retreats and each one helped reveal in me many new connections and pathways into the rolling deeper consciousness of Self and Unity. In my opinion, the Continuum work is based on the fluidity of our system and claiming the movement that we are through listening and acting from the inner wisdom within. When we get in touch with this primal motion, we realize that we are much more than the human body as the Source begins to awaken our senses.
Sometimes after a Massage Session, I'll offer some of the things that I have learned at my Continuum workshop because although this Creation by Emilie is different than anything else you have ever experience, it does hold many of the same principals that are found in Craniosacral Therapy, Structural Integration and Massage. I find her work to be fun, creative and something my clients can practice at home. It is certainly out of the box, and it is indeed helpful to be open minded, but integrating the benefits of the Continuum can only exponentially help in the healing between therapist and client.
For a taste of the woman who created Continuum, I am including and interview with this teacher, Emilie Conrad. I sincerely hope you enjoy it. It will open your mind to a whole new way of thinking.

Massage those Muscles... in Naples
Massage those Muscles
Generally with massage, I work mostly with the Craniosacral System and the fasical layers for a more therapeutic result than with specific muscles. However, I do find and work with a few muscles that are often tight that may cause lower back pain. Sometimes with a little bit of gentle work going deeper into these muscles, clients feel a great deal of relief right away. One of the trigger muscles that often contracts and feels painful is the hip flexor Quadratus Lumborum. The movement of the QL is a slight twist or a lateral flexion from one side to the other. When tight, pain is often felt around the ileum, SI joint, trochanter or groin. It may appear that one leg is shorter than the other because the length along the lower back is shortened around the contraction. Pain relief is often easy with just some basic work. However, remember that if your body is feeling pain, touching into that place may momentarily hurt. But it will be worth while once that pain pattern dissipates and flexibility and ease come back into play. In terms of education, here is an overview of the QL:
For the best pain relief results...
Take time to feel into your body, so that you can explain your symptoms and areas of concerns to your Massage Therapist. The body speaks and has a lot to say. Why not take the opportunity to listen and get the relief you need?
At Lighten Up Therapies, our focus is to work therapeutically. That may mean a nice light Swedish Massage, but if you are in pain... meeting that place with care and skill usually helps you to destress and feel better.

St. Francis of Assisi and Healing
It's easy to run up against personal stumbling blocks and to forget that there is always a solution. But by putting one foot in front of the other, one step at a time, you can always move forward. There is always an open doorway if you choose to look. One of the best ways I have heard this put is:
When the path has lost its light, ask for help. It is through relationship that we can expand our horizons. It is through giving and receiving that clarity comes.
“Start by doing what is necessary, then what is possible, and suddenly you are doing the impossible.”
― St. Francis of Assisi
― St. Francis of Assisi
When the path has lost its light, ask for help. It is through relationship that we can expand our horizons. It is through giving and receiving that clarity comes.
Ask your partner, your friend, or go for some therapy. Everything is always within reach.

Awaken Your Body to Spirit
“The body is a sacred garment: it is what you enter life in and what you depart life with, and it should be treated with honour, and with joy and with fear as well. But always, though, with blessing.”

Massage and Healing Energy
Everyone has his/her own energy fingerprint. The Human Energy Field is unique for each individual in that throughout the chakra system energy is constantly being metabolized both in and out as is needed. At the same time, that energy is moving both up and down parallel to the spine into the earth and up into the heavens, nourishing and balancing the whole system.
During a massage session, the intention of an experience Professional is to hold a container for positive change for the client. The more Presence the LMT carries, and the more she is aware of the client's field, a certain melding or energy exchange may happen that supports healing. Either or both people may be conscious of what is happening, but as long as the intention is wellness, a deeper intelligence will take lead of the session.
For a Professional Massage Therapist who does Energy Healing, she will know how to regulate her energy field and that of the client too. It all begins with a gentle listening and using of Higher Sense Perception to detect any imbalances or disruptions. She can work both with the physical part of the massage, while at the same time or in alternation, restructure, re-fill a depleted field, remove phlegm or anything else that needs assistance in shifting and changing.
Energy Healing can help clients physically, emotionally, with the thinking process, with relationships or even spiritually. Bringing the holistic Energy Model into Massage Therapy can help awaken the senses and support Deeper Contact with Self and personal process work.
Integrate... and Allow.

Massage Vs. Thinking
Massage Soothes what the Thoughts May Not
Have you ever tried to figure out why you are not feeling happy or good in your body?
We can think hard and never come up with a reason why we feel sore or pain inside. That's because the body has a mind connection to the brain and we are not always directly listening to it. Inside each cell is a story of Creation, Function and Potential Death. Every experience that that cell has lived is potentially included in its existence. It is possible to dialogue through voice, but sometimes the story needs to be touched in an intimate non-verbal manner in order for the pain to let go through the sensory relationship with the brain. We have sensory, feeling and intellectual communications happening all the time. It is in the level that we have been hurt that the wisdom of love and healing resides.
Massage Therapy may be the right thing for you to explore your relationships between the Mind Body Spirit Connection. Look for a practitioner who can work with all three to help you release your pain patterns.
We all deserve to live in joy and love.

Massage, Your Structure and Power
Structural Integration Massage
Created by Dr. Ida Rolf
Have you noticed before that when a person stands straight with good structural alignment that they appear more confident, powerful and successful?
There is some truth in that a person who doesn't collapse in the spine is more in touch with their inner authority.
Maya Angelou puts it eloquently,
"Stand up straight and realize who you are, that you tower over your circumstances. You are a child of God. Stand up straight."
We are inherently taught how to stand by our parents, teachers and community. Life's circumstances and how we react to them also shape the way we stand in our lives. However, we with some fascial massage and re-education, it is very possible to find your line. When you do, everything will feel differently because you will be walking through life in positive relationship to gravity.
Structural Integration Massage opens the body and allows your Divine life force to shine.

Health in Naples
It's been one of the hardest flu Seasons in a long time. Record numbers of people are leaving for the hospitals due to severe flu symptoms. So what can you do to help yourself stay healthy this winter?
Most people know to wash their hand with soap under warm water frequently. That is a good start. A product that I have used and like to recommend to stop the spread of the flu is "Thieves" made from Young Living Oils. Apply a few drops onto your tongue and "bang", bacteria and viruses lose their strength. You can taste and feel the clearing difference right away. Young Living Oils also sells toothpaste and other products that keep the body healthy. Worth a try for sure. On a personal note, I'd like to say that it is helpful to check with your physician to see if your Vitamin D levels are sufficient. Vitamin D has been shown to keep the immune system functioning optimally. I have found myself sick much less since I started taking supplements upon my doctors orders. Then, on a last note, let's not forget eating healthy fruits and vegetables. Supplements are supportive, but whole foods are key to staying healthy.
Found this "natural" suggestion that I picked up a few days ago that is also worth a try:
Take good care of yourself this Flu Season.

Energy Healing in Naples
Energy healing has been around for thousands of years. Research has found it in basic Ayervedic medicine, Acupuncture and now the widespread popular modality Reiki. These are probably some of the most well known energy medicines, but I'd like to also include a major Pioneer in this field, Dr. Barbara Brennan, who over 30 years ago, gathered some of these ancient techniques and brought forth a powerful template of multi-dimensional healing.
The four dimensions that are integrated from The Brennan Healing Science model are based on the Physical, the Auric Field, the Hara, and the Core Star levels. Often when people run into physiological problems, they look toward allopathic medicine to resolve issues. However, with a more holistic method to healing such as BBSH healing work, a facilitator works with the whole being. What this means is that the healer connects with the physical, emotional, mental, heart, spiritual, hara and the Divine to tap into healing energies. This is a process where contact is made with the more subtle levels of energy and our reconnecting or reawakening widens our experience of known integration and Self-Realization.
Sharon Hartnet studied at the Barbara Brennan School of Healing for a four year Professional Degree, Two years of Advanced Studies, Two Years of Supervision Studies and became a faculty member at the school a few years ago. She encapsulates this work in her own field and also expands it into a more unitive field for healing in therapist/client relationships and group dynamics. Everything is the universe is made of vibration and all people have the capability to resonate and harmonize together in the Essence of Life.
Brennan Energy Healing may be used for physical ailments and healing, but it also touches into the flowing feelings and thought forms and such to align the Soul into its' fullness.
If you would like to learn more about Brennan Healing Science, call Sharon for a free 15 minute telephone consultation.
