Massage in Naples

A Client's recent Question:

What is Craniosacral Therapy?

Craniosacral Therapy is a light touch massage approach that can support dramatic improvements in the quality of your life. It releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction. The intent of this form of massage is to listen to the Cranial Rhythm and help the nervous system to relax and self-correct. Because Craniosacral is so gentle, it may be used with infants, seniors, people of all ages.

Craniosacral Therapy as used at Lighten Therapies is based on the foundation of Dr. John Upledger's DO's work. Dr. John was a pioneer who brought this type of massage and manual therapy to a greater range of people who have studied and fine tuned their skills with various levels of training and experience. Check www.Upledger.com for a practitioner in your area.

Ida Rolf's Structural Integration Work has found itself a home in Naples, Florida!

Massage Naples Florida loves Structural Integration Therapy~

I know that Rolfing has earned a reputation of being a little painful at times.  But have you ever talked to someone who has received the full 10 series share their perspective on the work?  My clients are enthused with their newfound sense of freedom in movement and the return to a more youthful vitality.  They often come back for a more advanced set of a 3 series months after integrating the original work.  The feedback is that the work itself and the occasionally experienced discomfort is well worth the benefits they feel in their bodies long-term!

How does Structural Integration (SI) differ from Massage?

The difference between typical Massage and Structural Integration is that the SI practitioner is focusing on working with the fascia.  With a seasoned therapist,  gentle contact is initially approached by touching into the more superficial layers of this connective tissues. An organized set of sessions is implemented to hold a container for integrating the body for better alignment and functionality in relationship to gravity.  Dr. Ida Rolf came up with a recipe that sets up an orderly approach to working with this weblike net from different angles moving deeper and deeper from the sleeve to the core, releasing scar tissues, adhesions and dysfunction throughout the whole body.  The intention is to help the layers of fascia to differentiate, lengthen and create more space and movement within the body.  More movement means more life force and dialoging within and throughout the various body systems.  Because the fascia is the material in the body that contains and connects all of the "body parts",  touching into one area will affect the rest of the body in a positive way.  The reason why Dr. Ida Rolf created the whole series though is because when the body is touched the way the 10 series is set up,  the wrappings of fascia can be released so that everything interacts in a more healthy way, and to connect the body in a way that brings about a more organized structural efficiency and integration.

To get back to the idea of discomfort of this type of work... yes it is different than massage because the tissue is being lengthened and as the contraction opens, the cellular memory of that tissue lets go of the pain that has been stored there.  For example,  if you fell off of a bike when you were a little child and hurt your shoulder and contracted,  when the tissue is touched and you feel it deeply, the tissues awaken and that energy can dissipate.  This may be pain that you have forgotten and do not register on a daily basis,  but still exists inside the original area of injury.

So you may ask,  why bother if I don't feel it anymore?  What I have found with my clients is that when  pain has been stored in the body,  they may become numb there and stop using that part of their body.  It's as if the brain says,  "don't move,  because I don't need to feel there".  Eventually,  all the places in the body that are carrying tension and pain stop functioning optimally. Then at some point, they make a movement, and find themselves in a lot of pain because that whole area or some connection has been ignored for so long.  Recently,  I worked with a client who could not move her arm well.  She didn't know why.  Basically, she had a frozen shoulder.  But as we gently worked with the fascia, movement slowly came back.  It was a slow process, but it was helpful.  We communicated during the sessions, and I always respected her boundaries.  It is important for the therapist to touch in with the client with questions and limits so that the body is healed rather than re-injured.

My question is... why wait until you are stooped forward,  or have pulled our your back or have a very painful nerve impingement?  The healthier you are when you go in for a 10 sessions, the easier the work is,  and you will find yourself feeling aglow and happier with yourself and your body.  Even if you wait until you are hurt or feeling pain,  this work gets to the core of the problem better than anything I have found.  Fascia is healthier when is lengthened, freed up and unwound.  Be proactive and treat yourself well to a 10 series of Structural Work for your increased flexibility and higher energy levels.

I am a licensed massage therapist and I will offer you muscular massage work if that is what you are looking for.  I understand the great benefits that come from increased circulation and lymph, de-stressing and totally relaxing with a Swedish or Hot Stone Massage.  But I also see the great advantage to looking at longterm more holistic approaches to your health and wellbeing.

Massage of Naples: Love your feet.

Believe it or not,  I have had clients come in for a Massage or Structural Integration Session who wear high heel shoes for years everyday and the foot doesn't look much different than the one above!

It is so important to get shoes that fit and support your structure.  Some good ideas to consider while shopping  are:

1.  Step onto the shoe sizer and get your correct size.  Shoes that are too small will actually begin to    shape your foot inward and into compression.

2.  Limit your use of High Heal Shoes.  Sure those six inch heels are the rage,  but when it comes to walking the distance, take them off.   Maybe just wear them for special occasions.

3.  Make sure the toe is wide enough. Look at your feet and notice if the toes crunch.

4.  Walk around in shoes before buying them.

5.  Keep flip flops to a minimum.

6.  Find a shoe store that sells high quality shoes geared toward healthy posture.

Your feet take on a lot of responsibility to get you from one place to the other. They deserve to be treated well.  If your foot is not meeting the ground in healthy natural alignment,  the rest of your posture is going to be out of balance too.

Dr. Ida Rolf's Structural Integration work can be very helpful also in alleviating chronic pain that may be caused from improper shoes.  Although changing to supportive shoes and boots is the necessary for permanent positive change!

Naples Florida Massage: Presence

I was looking on Facebook today and someone had this picture on it with a Caption that said,  "Keep your nose out of other people's business."  I thought it was funny.  But it also has a deep seed of truth in it.  When we get involved in other people's lives, especially where we don't belong,  life tends to become overwhelming and draining.

If you want to de-stress and find your center,  take some time to slow down and meditate internally and with what is directly within your sensory capacity.  It is there that life is rich and nurturing  In the NOW,   the quiet of Presence feels eternal and fulfilling.

Better yet,  come in and receive a massage and/or bodywork.  Allow yourself the gift of nurturing and generosity.  Or decide on doing some Spiritual work or Deep Cellular Awareness exploration.

Massage Naples Florida offers a variety of different modalities of healing that will meet your needs.

Love the one you are with...Naples, Massage

Thoughts about Massage...

A good Massage Therapist has a good working routine. A great Massage Therapist is an artist who dances free form by listening to the body's innate wisdom.

In practicing Massage and healing work, the art is also in deep contact. For deep contact, the best therapist chooses love first.  Loving in the moment is very healing. The client feels met deeper than the physical touch.

Why is Fascia Important?

Fascia is the key element that holds everything together in our body. It is purely illusion that all of our muscles, organs, tissues, blood vessels, nerves and internal aspects of the body are separated. Rather they are all connected through an intricate web of fascia that envelops, wraps, sheaths, intertwines and attaches with the ability to balance and create a more powerful, resilient body.

Fascia is Postural Organ. If you are feeling out of alignment, look to the connective tissue to help stack your body into a more orderly fashion that will help you move with more ease and freedom. Displacement is normally the cause of much pain in our body because it takes the body out of balance and it can not work efficiently. With habitual patterning, it can create adhesions, knots and discord. By finding an Experienced Structural Integration (SI) Therapist, you will find long term change that will revitalize you and enhance your body's functioning.

Fascia is gently manipulated in a ten series with SI work to take the stiffness out your tissues and to lengthen your body from the extrinsic sleeve to the deeper core on the various planes. You'll be surprised how much better you will feel not only physically, but emotionally and mentally too when you feed at ease in your body. Clients may feel a little uncomfortable during the 10 sessions, however, they also say the deep feeling was worth the price of admission to improved body mechanics and long term results.

If you have more questions about the fascia, call Sharon Hartnett at (239) 692-8486
